    1956 Buick Century Wagon Questions

I just bought a 1956 Buick Century wagon and I'm pretty sure it has a 3spd column shift manual. Could this be stock?

Here is a picture of the pedals:

And here are some numbers on the trans:

Do those pictures help any? Where should I look to find out for certain?

    Thanks,
    Ryland

Yes it is stock. The standard trans for the Special and Century was the 3-speed the optional trans was the Dynaflow. The Standard Catalog of Buick 1903-2004 (3rd ed.) lists the Daynflow as a $204 option on the Special and Century. About 2% of Buicks came with the manual Synchromesh transmission. In '56 the transmission was the strong 6-bolt top cover trans. It is a strong trans, about the same as the LaSalle's and much better than the 5-bolt top cover trans. The numbers you are showing appear to be the numbers from the tailshaft housing. For '56 my chassis parts book lists the tailshaft housing (aka transmission rear bearing retainer group 4.317) number as 1168512, but the books often leaves out additional numbers so 1168513 could also have been used in '56 as well. There should be some more numbers on the trans main case. Their location varies somewhat by year, but I think on a '56 they are on the passenger side and probably upside down if looking from the bottom.

Check here from more info on the numbers:

Post a picture of the cowl tag and vin tag (drivers door jamb) if you have them.

Here is another '56 Century with the 3-speed on ebay:

Lots of good pictures that might be worth saving to help you with yours. Also notice the difference in the rear bumpers. Your car has the extra J-bars on it.

    Thanks for the replies!

I went to pull the spark plugs yesterday but my socket fit down into the recess that the plug is in. Its long enough just too wide. Should I turn the socket down on my lathe so it fits? Or is there a special one I should buy?

Also the car needs new floor pans, do you know anyone who sells complete floor pans for this car? I see that classicfabrication.com sell them but they don't specify for a longroof, will any 1956 Buick Century pans work?

    Thanks,
    Ryland

The front floor pans should be the same. I don't know about the rear floor pans. I don't know of anyone else that makes floor pans. Your only other options are to find a donor car or make your own.
