    68 GS400 Cowl Tag / Engine casting #

    Hello, I recently purchased a 68 GS 400 Convertible, it is a 3spd fomoco I believe with the original Hurst Shifter and was wondering if someone could help decode the cowl tag?

    04E 7691
    ST 68-44667 KAN 190 Body
    TR 172-B V-1 Paint

    Also I checked the block under the #1 and #2 spark plug for the VIN however is blank, could have been machined off during a rebuild? Is there anywhere else I could verify matching #'s on the block? Pretty sure it is original as I have spoken to all owners however would be nice to verify, Thanks for any help.

    Thanks for the link, what is confusing is V-1 does not look like a viable trim option for 68.

    For 67 however it would decode as a charcoal body with white top, (which is accurate). My question is would be common for an early 68 model to have 67 paint codes on the cowl tag? Also I assume the (-B) after the interior code means buckets?

    Base as opposed to custom interior.

    Question What does the G-2 mean on the trim tag?

    This has got me confused too. I just picked up a 68 GS400 convertible. (09 D build date) The color code on the trim tag is G - 2? The G is for ivory mist gold, what does the 2 stand for? By the indentification codes I see for 68, it shows two letters and not a letter and a number. Like is should be G - R on the trim tag, Ivory mist gold with a white convertible top? But is clearly says G - 2 ? That's what I don't get, and apparently, the poster above didn't either?

    These codes are listed on the Cowl Tag and break down as listed below.
    Note: The first letter indicates the lower body color, the second letter indicates the top color.
    R is a white vinyl or convertible top.
    C is a black vinyl or convertible top.
    eg: RC = Scarlet Red with a Arctic White top.

    For 1968 :
    G 2
    G = Ivory gold Mist
    2 = Black Vinyl or Convertible Top

    R C
    The first digit or letter is the lower body color.
    The second digit or letter is the upper body or top color.
    In this case it represents a Two-Tone paint scheme.
    R = Scarlet Red Lower Body.
    C = Artic White Upper Body.

    You maybe correct.

    For 1968:
    V = Charcoal Metallic
    1 = Under any other year would be White
    But Buick for 68 did not offer white. Instead it was an off-white
    called Parchment code 6. Your build date is April so it is not a early production. More likely a stamping error.
