    1382201

jackpot. you've got a 1970. this should be at least 10.0:1 compression. pull a valve cover off and get us the casting number from the head.

also check the two letter engine code stamped between the #1 and #3 spark plugs. this will tell you what the original power output and application ( big car, intermediate or Stage 1 ).

check out the reference section in the bar at the top of the forum.

    the hd #is 1382546

okay, now we've got a problem. the head # crosses to a 1971 350 while the block # crosses to a 1970 455. there must be an error in the casting # list as it's not physically possible to attach a major casting component from one of the Buick engine families ( SBB and BBB ) to another. among other differences there's over .5" more bore spacing on a BBB than on a SBB.

how many bolts secure each valve cover? 5 bolt valve covers are a Buick Big Block ( 400, 430, 455 ) and 6 bolt valve covers are a Buick 350.

    found no #between 1and 3 only

it's not a 'number', it's two letters. and on my 1970 'SP' code 315hp 350ci SBB, the 'S' and 'P' are so far apart that if you didn't know they belonged together you'd never guess it.

6 bolts on the valve cover

distributor at the front of the motor? Buick 350, no question.

    bore x stroke is 3.800" x 3.850". yes, it's undersquare. in production from 1968 to 1981.

    350 is 0n the ... intake

    that's another typical 'tell' for a 350.

casting number lists are very spotty for the Buick 350 stuff so i don't know if anyone will be able to narrow it down to a specific year for you.

Gessler is building his own cross reference and, as he's deriving this numbers from what he's finding on the cars, i think the quality of his list is fairly high:

    Roger,

You really should have a look through the Reference area of this site.

The info bob k mando gave you was given to this site by him and can be found here

Casting numbers are also listed in small, big and nailhead lists.

Where to find the numbers is listed here

There is VIN, Body number and trim codes in the year sections.

More information is added on a fairly regular basis and new additions are listed on the news panel of the index page and announced in the weekly newsletter.
