The GS was an option on the Riv, and won't show on the VIN. It only shows that it is a Riv.
A buddy has recently purchased a capped out '71 Riv for parts. It has GS badges. The VIN plate reads ST 71 49487FL1 098782BDY TR 674 Can anyone tell me if this is a true GS?

just FYI, that's not the VIN tag, it's the Trim tag. the VIN tag is located in the front left corner of the dash and normally has to be viewed by standing outside the car and looking through the windshield.
ST 71 = 1971
4 = Buick
94 = Riviera
87 = 2dr hardtop coupe
FL1 = Flint, MI
098782BDY = sequential body #, this is different from the production # in the VIN
TR 674 = Sandalwood cloth interior
as Bob says, the GS was an option and wouldn't be coded in the VIN. check with http://www.rivowners.org/, they may be able to help you more with the car ... at the least they'll be able to tell you exactly where and what trim the car should have if it's 'real'.
