Casting number on crankshaft

Rust shouldn't be a problem if you are going to have it turned. Otherwise, I have just recently been experimenting with white vinegar in a 5 gallon pail to clean up some crankshafts. It works pretty good, but it would be nice to be able to get the whole crank submerged at once. After about a day, use a scotch pad or stiff brush and start giving it a wipe.

It is rustier than I would like, but hopeful. In the past I have used evapo-rust. Pricey but good. I may build a "tank" just large enough for the crank. Perhaps from a plastic pipe. We'll see.

Do you use straight vinegar?

I am using about 80% vinegar with distilled water. Probably should just use straight vinegar for what it costs.
