65 Riviera

Just picked up a 65 Rivi that was idle for 5 years and in the middle of preparing everything in order to turn the engine. I see everywhere where the engine color is a teal or light blue. This engine is red color. Is this a standard/correct color?? It is a at the very least a 401 but checking stamps to verify if it is a 425. Any feedback is appreciated.

In '66 Buick painted the 425 red in its full size cars, so yours is probably that. There is quite a bit of identification info in the "Reference" section of this site.

thanks.
have verified that the numbers on the block match the vin. Seems to be the original paint on the motor as well. What color red and any ideas where I can pick some up?

The 65 401/425 were green in 65. Yours mus have been repainted at some point. I got buick green from year one last time I got it. POR also makes a buick green that is more durable.

Have you figured your engine color question out yet?

I wonder if you have found any resources regarding Riviera Engine color. My 1963 401 is Green.

Many 1963 Riviera 401 engines are Silver, but I've also seen green ones. Does anyone know why this is?

I have seen at least 2 nailheads in '63 Rivieras that had factory red paint and 1 '65 Electra that had a red engine from the factory. I have no explanation for this. I always assumed it was different assembly plants, but I don't really have a clue. If I was going to repaint one back to red I would just buy a couple cans of the later 455 Buick red and call it good. I don't think that the red's are that much different, as I recall. The last time I ordered Buick green paint from TA Performance they sent me 2 cans that said Ford Green on them. Had I known I would have just ordered it at my local parts store and paid about half as much. The color was close enough for my customer to be happy. It's hard to judge how much the color changes over the years. 40 years of fade and heat cycling and grime can mask what the original green-blue-teal was supposed to look like. The last Buick red I bought at NAPA sprayed on as an almost candy purple, but after a couple of heat cycles it deepened and turned almost the most perfect Buick red I'd ever seen. I even tried to take it back when I first started spraying it. But as there were few other options the guy at the counter convinced me to try it and it worked out fine. Sorry if I'm rambling. Happy painting. If yer not trying to win Pebble Beach paint the thing whatever color you think would look best, it's your car, make yourself happy.

The correct color is teal green. I agree that someone has repainted it a different color at some point. Paint it whatever color you like, but me personaly I like the green, and it also sets it apart from every other bowtie.

I bought my Buick Green paint from Classic Buicks mostly because their advertisement on thier website showed VHT brand. Whe I got it, what they sent me was high temp Duplicolor- and boy was I peeved! After I used it, I was VERY pleasantly surprised and pleased how it lookes and how it went on. It hasn't faded yet either. Now I would reccomend it. Rattle cans are a lot easier to deal with too.

I have read that the buick green is the same color as Detroit Diesel green. I can't confirm this, but by looking at photos it at least looks close.

I'm bringing this back up to the top as an answer to Riviet's question about engine color so we don't have to rehash it again.

I matched the color on the top end of my motor (intake, brackets, etc) by using "Detroit Diesel" green.....I cant see much difference in my block to the intake.....

This is nothing like the green on my '65 Riv 401, which is more of a Teal (bluish)
