Hi,

i am am helping friend who has a 66 Electra. It has a red engine, but has a air cleaner label for Wildcat 445. Is there any way to tell whether it is a 401 or a 425?

The 401 and 425 both could be red in 66. Most likely a 401 since 445 was the Tq of the 401 and 465 the Tq of the 425 on the air cleaner. You should find an MT or MR stamped on the right side of the engine on the valley pan rail in front of the valley cover if it is a 401.

The greens

Thanx Dr.,
but the guy also has a 66 Wildcat with a green engine. Where does that into the scheme of things.

ntl, the next time am near the cars I will check the codes.

The green 66 is a 401 unless repainted. The GS Skylark has a red 401 (MR) only in 66 that could have been transplanted into your car or all 425 (MW) were red in 66.

red 66 engine

yes, it could have been a transplant. as we noted, i will not be able to know until i look at the coding on the engine.

but i was hoping there was some way. he wanted to know also.

The last eight digits in the vin # are stamped on the left hand side of the same valley rail. You have the original motor of the car if that partial vin on the engine matches the last part of the vin # of the car. Are you trying to see if the engine is original?

thanks for the response and continuing patience with me on the issue.

yes, i am trying to see if it is original. but i am also, and first of all trying to see if it is a 401 or a 425. i thought i could find out the size by looking at a stamping some place. could you confirm where that is? would you have a picture of that MT, M? stamping to show the location. i thought that some of the numbers were on the valley cover, but i am not near any cars at this time; away at work. so if there were pictures, i could guide him.

externally, the 401 and 425 are the same engine with the same stroke.

so, if you're not going to pull a head off and measure the bores, the only way to differentiate is with the engine code stamping.
