Hey all,
Now that my fuel pump is rebuilt and clean, I've noticed that the car seems to be seeping oil from the two ports between the fuel and vacuum pumps. I assume these ports are so pressure from the crankcase doesn't blow out the internal oil seals (so I've heard). Since I'm sure my 100,000 mile motor has some blowby, I was wondering if anybody's hooked up a PCV system and how you did it!
 
Actually, to make sure, ARE the two holes in the fuel pump on Straight 8s for venting pressure and oil? I assembled all oil seals correctly in the pump, and it's leaking pure oil, not oil and gas...am I missing something? I have a feeling it was doing it before but I never really looked at the fuel pump because it was working! :)

I bought some NOS pumps as I heard the oil leak that I had is a common problem after rebuilds. They are avilable on Ebay alot. ~T~
 
Cool tbone--I've been waiting for someone to tell me I'm not crazy! OK, maybe not not crazy, but that this is not uncommon! Did you just stick the NOS pump on the car without rebuilding it?
 
As for the PCV thing, I think I've finally sorted mine out... I put a PCV in the top of the draft tube baffle and put a rubber plug up inside the bottom to seal it off. I then T'd it into the manifold side of the vacuum pump. using 5/16 metal line (rubber line collapsed and didn't work at all). It's pulling 19" of vacuum at idle now, so I'll see how the fumes are!!

Great Balls of Fire--This is a long time since we've discussed this, but do you have any pictures of your PCV setup...how did it work? I drove my '53 to work and the fumes were a little thick when accelerating...I'd love to get a PCV on the thing! Just haven't gotten around to it!
 
I've never heard of anything to keep oil away from the pump, although that would be nice! My rebuilt one didn't leak for about 4 months, now it leaks too. It hasn't sucked the oil dry though...but I'm wondering if a PCV system will cut back enough on the crankcase pressure to reduce the leak!

I'll try to post some pics later, maybe... I've actually "improved" it since I posted this. As I mentioned earlier, I drilled a hole in the top of the draft tube baffle. I finally connected a line directly up to the Vacuum fitting on the manifold. I T'd it directly at this point to avoid any oil getting in the vacuum pump. I added one of those caps on the oil filler hole that has a hose fitting off the side. I ran a 5/8 hose straight into the aircleaner. This seems to have removed almost all fumes. The PCV works at idle but not when moving, So the breather cap setup picks up the fumes while driving. :thumbsup:

No carb mods, although I do get a small puff of smoke when I tromp on it. The wipers work fantastic ever since I took of the little valve on the top of the "motor" and cleaned it. I have good vacuum at idle (17-21) and at steady open throttle. I didn't get any pics yet and I'm doing a month long road trip starting monday. I'll try to check in from time to time. :shifter:
