Howdy, I have sat back and viewed this website for a while... Now I have a project...1964 Riviera.

It is a 8 cylinder and a 4 barrel carter AFB.

How do I identify the engine size?

From the numbers on the two head: B1196914J

Where is the block casing number like on my 1970 chevelle?

The block casting number is located on the top rear of the block just in front of the bellhousing, but this will NOT positively identify the engine. What you want is the engine ID code, which will be stamped into the top surface of the block just in front of the valley cover.

The links above provide where and what the engine production codes are. The 64 Riv came standard with a 425. The 425 often had the same casting number as a 401. They are externally the same. The 64 Riv engine was green while yours is red. It may have been repainted or replaced. The only Nailheads ever painted red from the factory were the 66 425 (Quadrajet or 2x4 equipped) and the 66 401 in the Gran Sport Skylark (AFB or Quadrajet equipped).

Use the first link that Dr. Frankenbuick gave you to find the number. If your engine is original to the car, the code will be KW. Using the same link, find the engine serial number. It should be the same as your VIN if the engine is the original engine to the car. Interesting driver's side valve cover. What goes into that hole?
