rear main seal

I have a 1950 buick special with the straight 8. i was told i needed a rear main seal. i got a catolog for kanter and they have a complete gasket set but it doesn't say if it has the seal. does anyone know where i can get just the seal?

The seal is going to be a rope seal. I have always been in a position of using one from a kit on a motor, but I expect that they are very standard. Someone like "Bill K" on this site may have some input. I have some rope seal which happens to have been the size of everything I have ever needed it for. I remember it as probably 5/16" square.

Pat,
See if you can find a NOS rope seal or an ooooold replacement one that is made of the old white asbestos material. The new black seals seem to be a real pita to get sealed up good, at least that has been my experience. If you cant find a seal, let me know and I will get one for you.

although chances are pretty slim, egge machine MAY have some asbestos laden rope seals in their shelves. best gasket is another source--no asbestos, but some of their seals incorporate either teflon or graphite.
