Harmonic balancer removal, 1950 with 263

Need to remove the balancer to replace seal and paint the engine. Is the bolt a right or left hand thread? Also, what is proper way to hold the engine from turning while I remove the bolt?

    Thanks,
    Jerry

I just removed the balancer from a '68 430. There were three bolts around the center bolt holding the bottom pulley on. The bolt holding the balancer on was removed by turning it counter-clockwise. The balancer was held in place by a bar wedged between it and the water pump. The balancer was pulled off with a special tool I rented from the auto parts store. I do not imagine it to be too much different on the '50 263. Good luck.

Counter clockwise to remove the bolt. An impact wrench will take it right out. otherwise, use a long handled ratchet and smack it with a mallet a couple of times and the bolt should break loose.

Thanks for the replies. Will head outside this weekend and give it a try. Should work just fine and will post my success, or lack thereof!

Summit Racing sells a holder tool that attaches to face of the balancer and then extends over to the cross member frame to hold it in place. This is tool is a good and helpful idea when it comes time to reinstall the balancer since the torque spec is something like over 150 ft lbs which can be found in the Shop Manual.
    Thanks in Advance!
