    1952 Special oil canister help

I am trying to figure out what is supposed to be inside the canister. My manual shows a spring under the lid on top of the oil filter however mine did not have one on top. However there was a spring at the bottom of the canister that looks out of place. The shaft that the filter slides onto has a tiny ledge about an inch from the bottom of the canister. I assume that is the stop for the filter so I do not see the reason for the spring at the bottom. Could this spring be the one that is supposed to be on top of the filter?

So there should not be a spring at the bottom, correct? That's where it was when i pulled the filter, with no spring on top. I know there should be a spring on top and I am assuming that the spring that was in the bottom (see pic above) is the one that should be on top.

You have used the 51006 filter successfully? I have one and the lid gasket did not seem to fit so I have not used it and researching the filters, most people were using a Baldwin P26, which is a replacement for the AC P127 that my manual shows. The 51006 corresponds with a Baldwin P41 and also a Fram C4P, which some parts houses show as their replacement.

I am wondering if my canister is correct as it has the drain plug in the bottom and I have read somewhere that stopped in 50.

yup works fine for me. my 50 parts car 263 hyd lifter has the drain on the can also. my 52 does not. I have another new filter and the can off of the parts car. I can see if it is different than my 52.

Bob's Automobilia shows the same filter for 49-53, so I should be okay.

On an oil change, do I put the filter in then fill the canister up to the line inlet towards the top of the canister?

Well tried to install the 51006 filter and once it seats against the collar towards the bottom of the shaft, the top seal does not reach the shaft. In other words, the filter is too tall. This car is constantly throwing curve ***** at me.

I would say so. I measured the height of the shaft from the collar, which is roughly 4-7/8". The 51006 is just over 5" and the Baldwin shows to be 4-11/16. I must have made 50 calls between yesterday and today to find a Baldwin or Hastings P26 local, since we have a car show this weekend, but I guess I will have to order one.
