Pilots are used on the intake only. As for the use of sealant CNC-DUDE says to use it.
I'm installing a new copper gasket set on my 1942 compound manifold and dual exhaust manifolds (Straight 8 engine) and have a couple questions: 1. Should I use copper gasket sealant or prepare the copper in anyway before installing. 2. Are there supposed to be pilots installed on the intake and exhaust manifolds or does the intake manifold only have pilots? I came across a post stating the exhaust manifold does not have pilots to account for slippage.

Thanks on the pilot answer. Whoever installed the exhaust manifolds on my car originally used pilots. I figured this was an error. On the copper gasket side, most posts around the web say use copper gasket sealant but most applications, to use or not use, do not specifically apply to 60 year old cars.
Should the copper gasket sealant be used on both sides of the gasket?
Yes, just apply a thin coat of an RTV silicone to both sides and you'll be fine.
There's no such thing as too much cam....only not enough engine!
