Thread: New Aluminum Valve covers and intakes.....

  1. #21
I am really interested in the manifold--- two carbs please. A small increase in performance and good looks for contempory "hotting". Same for the tappet cover and side plate.
I am currently restoring a '47 Special down in Australia. Chassis done and engine now being balanced. New front end etc, body is next.
Several years to go but it will be worth it. Car has been in the family since '49 when it was bought in Malaya by my father.
    Look forward to production

Here is just a small sample of what i've been playing with. Its a simple little 3 Port Fuel Log with raised letters. But it helped to figure out the learning curves for draft angles and shrink allowances. The valve covers and side covers will be the same techniques, just much larger in size. Intake manifolds will be a little more tricky, as they will require a seperate core to create the plenum area.

I am new to this sight. I noticed you are Making pieces for the straight 8. I have a 263 that I am mating up to a 700R with the Bendentsens kit (spelling?). I too am also very interested in a multicarb manifold, valve cover and what ever other items you may be creating. I have a 1952 Buick Super with a 1953 caddy rear tail section grafted onto it. I am also considering setting up a blower on it and would love to know who would be able to help me with this. I live LI, NY. Thank you.

Thanks a lot Bill, I am planning to make some multi-carb intakes, probably for use with the Stromberg 97 or 94 style 2 bbl carbs. Is that what most are expecting to use, or are Rochesters 2 gc's more desireable or something else all together. Thanks again.

Do you also have a drawing with the exhaust ports? I have been looking for this info for a while .
I am also planning on a custom aluminum valve cover. Machined top with formed side and flanges all welded together. And a sheetmetal intake for a 4 bbl. I am not planning on water heated but with my climate I don't see it needed but I may see that would be needed to do it.

    Thanks
    Ken

These dimensions make a snug fit, so you don't have to use those locator rings in the intake ports to align them. Since most people would use fabricated headers with such intake, there's no point making the flange thicker than 3/8" or so. I've used 10 mm as we get metric materials to work with

    Fantastic ideas! I am in!

Im finally starting to recieve some items for the 320 engine(valve cover, side cover) to begin making my patterns from. Hopefully, I can locate some of the items for the 248/263 engines as well so I can start on those. Anyone have any extra valve covers or side covers they would like to donate for the cause it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, i'll update as I have more progress.

I have heard of a foundry near me that u can take a item to like a valve cover and have them cast it for you. Now you have to make the item a little larger for shrinkage and make sure the draft angles are good but they will cast the item. I was thinking about doin this with the valve cover I want to make. Mainly because a machines surface is hard to get to look cast. I will try to located the company again because I thought it was pretty neat.

I wonder what material the mold would need to neade out of.

Cnc dude- what kind of mill do you run? I wish I had extra parts to loan you to help with the cause. They are good looking motors and can be great looking wig some dress up.

The pattern can be made out of several materials. If you are going to just do a one-off part, then some kind of hard wood is often used, and only a single shrink allowance is used on the pattern. For doing a more mass production type of part, then the pattern is usually made from aluminum for more durability and wear resistance. Having a nice modern CAM software package helps with programming and making a pattern correctly with todays technology. I use a Haas VF3 CNC mill everyday, so it helps to have access to this type of stuff when you need it.

Are you still waiting for takers on a crossflow head? If you are working on one, add some more stud holes as we are having a problem lifting the head with the 21 ARP studs. Would be nice with a 5 hole /cyl. arrangement. No passages between block and head are needed as they can be worked out externally. Probably for extreme engines only, I suspect. Probably not enough demand. Just dreamin'.
