    Tuning Woes

MY 53 buick special (bone stock) was running a bit rich....So I leaned her out a bit..
Occasionally when she is cold...she loses power when driving...
stutters if you will and wants to die. I also get some rather impressive backfiring...
I have found that if I take her out of gear and rev the engine, she holds her idle enough. I can pop the hood and then rev from the carb...eventually, when she warms up...fine....
Then when she is warm, she pulls really strong...
Did I lean her out too much? or is there another symptom...
The damn issue is intermittent...it's only happened twice...and it's usually when I am going to work..

Sounds like choke is opening too fast. Just a little education, with todays gas you need to run the carbs a little on the rich side nowadays.

When you say 'lean her out' are you talking about adjusting the mixture screws? If so, you're only affecting the mixture during idle. High speed mixture is fixed by the main jets and is not adjustable except by changing out those jets.

    Tuning woes

Is your heat riser working? Have you lubed it with oil and graphite, and tapped it back and forth in the manifold? The bi metal coil is available also.

You may also have a vacuum leak at the manifold or carb... On mine the inside of the carb heater chamber (part connected to exhaust) had holes inside.

Ok. Here is what I have discovered. The choke does not want to open, even with the automatic choke coil off the carb the choke has no tension on it... I have noticed a spring has come off the drivers side of the carb...It's a little wound spring over by the idle adjust screw, it looks like it should be attached to something, but cannot figure out where...http://oldcarmanualproject.com/manua...age130_jpg.htm
if you look here, it is part number 61-237 Fast Idle Cam spring
I have a 53 special which means my carb is a carter wcd
Any ideas or photos of this area that could help? I'm betting that this is why my choke does not want to open and why I am stuttering and losing power

This gets better...on the drive home today the 53 started bogging down...
I opened checked the choke and got that working right...and in the 70 degree weather we are having it up and died...I got the air cleaner off as it would not start back up...noticed...no fuel....gave it a few more pulls and got a spray of fuel and it fired back up.... now...could the heat of the day, plus the crack in my exhaust mani right by the carb cause the fuel in the carb to vaporize?
