Thread: front engine noise, water pump or generator

front engine noise, water pump or generator

    Howdy,

Ive got a noise that sounds like a squeeking fan belt coming from the water pump and generator area. It comes and goes randomly. Most of the time it will go away if i put the car in gear and accelerate up to speed.

Any ideas? (its not the fan belt)

Im thinking its the water pump because i cant imagine the generator making any noise???

While you're keeping us in the dark as to which one of your lovely old Buicks is sick, and showing a noise symtom we can only guess as to what is troubling her.

Yes the generator bearings if not given a drop of oil in the front and rear cup occasionally will protest with a squeal from time to time.

Brushes also in the generator have been known to speak out a bit also.

Why not take a long screwdriver and place it on both the water pump and generator and place your ear on the handle and listen. You should know in short order what part is seeking your attention.

At each end of the generator are little pipes with a spring loaded hinged cap. Open the cap and drop about 5 or so drops down the little pipe.

The water pump on my 50 is making a similar noise right now and I'm looking for a replacement. If oiling the Generator bearings doesn't make it go away its probably the pump.
