Im looking into that upgrade as well.
Who all is still running the old 30hp robbing pulley driven fan? I like mine and all but I'm thinking of going to an electric. what are your thoughts on this?

I did this on a 66 skylark and it worked great . I mounted the fan inside the stock fan shroud and bought the adjustable fan control thermostat. worked great . I also used a " on-off-on " switch under the dash to turn fan on when the ing. switch was on or to be controled be the thermostat . HTH

Do they really steal 30 HP?

If that fan steals 30 HP from my 263, I think I'm left with 30!

not sure if its 30hp but its more then 10 i'm sure. just seems more reasonable to go to an electric

The thing I like is taking that extra weight off the water pump shaft . HTH

When the HP draw is described as 30,(if it is that much) you must remember that is only going to be when the radiator is it hottest and the car is not moving but the engine is reved up in an effort to cool the rad. If the rad is not hot, the clutch is free. If the car is moving the air is entering the fan at speed.
My thoughts...
I all out performance, I would probably choose an electric fan. The choice can sometimes be forced with fit problems.
If performance is important, you really don't want a heavier duty fan than is necessary to do the job. The heavier clutches do engage stronger and move more air. If you are doing a hot rod where the original rad is not being used, a larger capacity may reduce the need for a HD clutch fan.

Yes, I don't think the clutch fans appeared before about 1966.
