ive heard not to do it unless they are worn without being reuseable or to put in stainless...thats no good? how do i use todays fuel without doing that?and i will give that guy a call if i have to rebuild but like i said<id like to find some rebuilt ones allready<would he have some?
thanx for the info and warning!
The Nailheads have a better alloy of cast iron that seems to be able to resist the valve seat recession that is common with the cheaper cars, Chevy and Ford etc. Also there is not enough metal in the seat area to support an insert. You risk cutting into the water jacket and then you have a big paper weight. Big block Chevy's are bad about that too. I believe that your desire for money savings will be futile in this endeavor. Get your set done so you know what you have. Buying used heads for anything but core value is a very risky business. If you buy a used set from somewhere across the country and they have a sledgehammer and pliers quality valve job on them. Then you are back to square one. If the guy might take them back you will still be out considerable shipping costs for shipping them twice. Anybody that has a fresh set will want the same amount of $ that it will take to get yours done. If they don't I wouldn't trust them. Good luck.
so they are already able to withstand the fuel of today? thank you for the information,it makes alot of sence getting mine done since you put it that way.ill be talking to my local machine shops to see who will do the best job for me today...thank you again!
For the nailheads the newer fuel does not provide the valve lubrication of older fuel. I add Marvel Mystery Oil to the fuel to aid in valve lube. I've been using Marvel Mystery oil in mine (fuel and crankcase) for 41 years

About every 800 miles I run a 50/50 mix of LL AV Gas and pump premium gasoline in my Buicks with nailheads. It gives you the lead and the octane that they need.
I have been doing this for the last 25 years with great results.
