it's the responsibility of the float needle to keep excess fuel from flowing into the carb bowls. the diameter of the line shouldn't have anything to do with how much the bowls get filled at idle, that's mostly a function of fuel pump pressure vs float level.
large ID fuel lines help insure that you don't empty the bowls at WOT or hard cornering and start to lean the engine out. i would suspect that they also help prevent vapor lock.
