    Question 1957 364 Nailhead identification

    Need Help!

    Hi! can anybody help me to indentify the 6 digit on this engine;

    I am planning to buy an old 364 Nailhead with Tri-power intake an 3 x 2 Carb setup. The engine comes from an old Sprintcar in Bakersfield CA, it is probably from the sixties, it has roller cam, heads have been worked over. At the moment I got the following numbers from the engine block; 184854 & 7D1060972.
    It seems to me that this is a 1957 Engine, taken from a 70 -75 Series Roadmaster. The D = 1957, and 7 = 70 Series.

    The 6 digit I have not found any information on at the moment. If possible, please explain it to me.

    I will have pictures of the engine and further detailes later today or tomorrow!

    Can anybody help me out?

    Thanks Jorn

    The "7D" would certainly point to a '57 364. The 6 digit prefix, along
    with the "7D..." suffix makes up the complete engine serial number.

    Thanks!

    I friend called me and says, that the 6 digit might refer to the VIN code of the orginal car it came from! Sounds reconable to me - any other?

    I can't be certain about the six-digit prefix - I'm fairly certain that
    the 7D1060972 is also considered the VIN code and would be found
    stamped on the VIN ID Tag at the driver's door hinge. BTW, the
    '1' after the 'D' identifies the Flint, MI assembly plant.

    EDIT: I wonder if that's the Body Serial No?

    MJT is correct. The number 7D1060972 is both the engine number and car serial number (aka VIN). On a numbers matching car this number will be the same as the car serial number on the plate in the drivers (left) door jamb. The other number (184854) is called the production code number. According to the chassis service manual this number along with the car serial number is used to identify the engine on product reports and that the production code does not constitute a legal engine number. A picture showing where the numbers are found is here (front of engine at bottom of picture):

    This is a good example how this forums works. I followed all the links, and I had visit one of them before, but I probably overlooked the other ones and some key information. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it.
