Thread: Gas line check valve?

  1. #1

    Gas line check valve?

Does anyone know where I can get a check valve for my gas line? If the '55 sits for awhile (week or so) the gas drains out of the line back into the tank. So, when I fire it up, it burns the gas in the carb, dies, then cranks till the lines and carb fill up and pour into the intake. Normally the 264 will fire before it makes a complete turn of the crank.

The valves in your fuel pump provide a built-in check valve. They're designed to allow flow in one direction only; into the carb, if they're in good working order. I suggest disconnecting the fuel line at the carb and putting some air pressure into the line. Blowing by mouth should give you enough pressure. (Put a piece of hose over the end of the steel tube if you don't like the taste of gas!) If you can't feel the air going into the line, your valves, and the pump, are OK. If you have to continue to blow, the valves are leaking. New pump called for.

    Thumbs up

You can get rebuilding kits from a variety of sources, perhaps even NAPA if you find the right store/warehouse. A kit should come with everything needed except the casting, but some of the parts are tricky to install. If you're not familiar with these, you might want to look around for an old mechanic who knows these units before ordering. Or, a lot of sources will rebuild your old pump and send it back ready to install. I just finished rebuilding one for my 40 Super; in my case the vacuum diaphraphragm shaft had to be repeened; it almost drove me nuts! But fear not, help is out there!!

While your pump will have diffences, this should give you enough information to do the job!
