As long as you use the dynaflow crank, the engines will interchange. You don't say what model car your '59 is. I couldn't find a reference to an LR code in my stuff. According to Dealer Letter No. 66-106A, the 401/425 engines for 1965 were LT - 401 w/ 4 bbl and 10.25 cr; LV 401 4 bbl. 8.75 cr; LW 425 4bbl, and LX 425 two 4 bbls.

In 1966 there's an MR code engine. It's the 401 that Buick called a 400 to meet the GM mandate of no engine larger than 400 cubes for the intermediates. It was the same as the MT, which is the same as the LT above. Perhaps this dealer bulletin didn't include the GS engine for '65 in its listing.

I'm sure that someone will know for sure.

LR is the 65 GS Skylark engine. It will have a rear sump pan like your 59.

    It will swap as above.

The only difference between the two, other than what has been mentioned, is that the thrust bearing thrust surface is larger. This DOES NOT matter, as they can be interchanged. Except for the oil pump,it's mounting & the oil filter adapter everything will remain the same, including pistons & rods. I don't believe the oil filter adapter you will have to use with the LR engine will matter being used in your '59.

I did the opposite. I used my 59 block and the crank from a 65 so I could use the s/p tranny in my 59 invicta. There is a differance in the starters also but you can make it work.I believe the 59 and 65 bolt to the block differant. I also opened up my diveshaft. TP
