    gas tank float...

well, i was doing a bunch of work to my 51 so i figured it would be a good time to drop the tank and check why my gauge always reads empty. the gauge did get power because every time i turn the ignition On it would jump to the E.

so i dried the float and found that there is gas coming from inside of it. i put it in a bucket of water and it barely floats. guessing that could be my problem. can i buy floats or should i try and epoxy it?

    thanks.

    gas gage float

Before you spend a lot of time on the float, check the gage first to see if the dash unit reads full when you move the arm of the float. You may have 2 problems. Then a replacement gage may be what you need.

I believe that Bobs Automobilia has them.

    Smile gas tank float

    Tyler,

If you put the float in a pan of hot water you will see bubbles coming out from where the leak is. You can do one of two things: 1 make the hole slightly bigger to let the gas out or l2 leave it in the pan and boil the gas out. When you shake the float you should hear the gas sloshing around. Once you think it's empty, solder over where the leak was.

well, i read this post after putting the tank back in the car. luckily its fixed, but yeah i should have checked the gauge too by simply moving the float. ill try and fix the original float like 38 Limo suggested. what i did to get it done is that i put a plastic float from an autometer sending unit. it didnt quite fit so we used some welding wire to secure it. its a bit ghetto but now it works.

    thanks.
