Hello people, Im new here and have just purchased a 86 gn. My car barely runs when first started cold but runs fine once on the road for a minute. The guy I bought it from says he was trying to figure it out forever and had changed out most of the sensors. Also if sittting at a light for a long time check engine light will flash a lean air fuel mixure code. Any Ideas?
GNs by nature will idle pretty rough, but it should not be enough to cause a problem. You really need to find out what sensors were changed on the car to avoid replacing them again. The first 2 things that come to mind are an oxygen sensor and possibly a mass air sensor. If the oxygen has not been changed, I would do that regardless. If it has, unplug the mass air and start the car. See if it makes a difference. You can also take a screwdriver and gently tap on the mass air sensor while the car is running. If you notice a difference, it is probably defective. Do you know how to set the idle air control valve? Reference here for info http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/faq/IACresetscan.html. This site has a wealth of info for the TR community and is incredibly useful. If this does not help, let me know. You also neglected to mention mods you may have done to the car.
