    1955 Buick questions

    Hello !

I accidently posted this in the Pre 40s section... opps

Its John here with a 1950s question. How much play should be on a 1950s era horn ring? Should it be springy? The horn ring on my 55 isn't, it moves freely on the wheel. Any wisdom in this area? How would one remove the horn ring?

Anyway, Ive been having a blast w/ my 55. Im on winter break now and get to work on it more.

What types of radiator coolant out there. I just noticed that the plastic container to the left of the radiator is empty and would like to know if there is anything special to put in there. ( Please escuse my novice apoach to classic cars, i dont want to screw it up ! )

One more question before I go. The rear quarter windows on the car (hdtop) are stuck in the up position. What would be the best way to get in there and fix um? I just bought a Shop Manual and it doen't give any advice on the wondows.

    Happy Holidays !

    John

JUst to give you a start with responses, I would say you definitly have something wrong with your horn ring. Sorry, I can't tell you more without doing some investigation.

The plasitic container is not original. In those days, they just dripped on the road. The addition of the container is an indication that someone has had cooling problems. In classic cars, I choose "diesel engine antifreeze" It used to be all that was available, but not as diesel.

You are probably going to have to pull the rear panel covers off to expose the window mechanics and see what is siezed up. Probably a little penetrating oil will solve it, (hopefully).

To adjust the horn ring: Pry off the conter plastic emblem, tighten down the nut in the center with a 3/8" nut driver, back off of it 1/2 turn and replace plastic emblem.

    John,
I just cleaned mine. You should be able to remove them by unbolting and rotating them to get them out of the lower strip on the bottom of the glass. Take them out and clean them with Marvel Mystery oil. Don't be shy with the oil, take a toothbrush and scrub the heck out of them and keep working the regulator up and down, do the same with the rollers also. YOU'LL be amased at how well they will work after your done. Nobody ever cleans or lubes the window regulators so your fighting 50+ years of grime. Good luck, Bill
