Need some advice!!!

I am considering buying this 1988 0r 89 Riviera. The current owner describes the problem like this;

"The car runs very well mechanically, but after about 20 mins on the road, it begins to sputter and run bad...The message on the touch reads "COMMUNICATIONS ERROR " and disappears. The runs extremely rough, sometimes even shutting down. If you turn the car off, and then back on again, it'll resume to driving fine for another 15-20 mins... "

Can anyone give me any help on trying to determine this problem? Any clues would be great. I probaly will still buy the car if for nothing else but parts, since I already own an '89 Riviera. But if it can be made to run, then in my book, 2 Rivs are better than one anytime!!!!!!!

get the codes out of the computers, on the climate control screen, press and hold off and warmer

Thanks....... I am going to pick it up by Monday, the 17th. Then I will try to check out the codes then to see if I can get a bead on it.
