Really old thread but I'm asking same questions, can I change rear seal without taking engine off?
Hello, I have a 1972 Buick Skylark 350. I just had the engine rebuilt by a local machine shop. The rear main seal is dripping. It has the new 2-peice urethane seal, not the rope type. My question is can you change this seal out while the engine is in the car. My concerns are, how hard is it to drop the oil pan? Will I have to raise the engine? Can you slide the new main seal in, with out removing the crank? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Pat

I have a 66 Skylark with a 340 and I changed from the rope seal to the urethane. I had to jack up the engine and remove the transmission mount bolts to get the pan past the front cross member. I don't know if a 72 would be the same or not. My manual had the information in it. Hope this helps. Les
