seatbelt laws??

I know it varies from state to state, i'm sure, but i've got a quick question about seat belts.

My 61 special never had seat belts. Does anyone know if you're required to put them in. I know i can get busted for not wearing a seatbelt, but what if the car never had them.

For safety sake i'll be putting them in when i can, but not until i get ready to alter the bench seats to make seatbelts work and fit thru the crack between the base and the back of the seat (there is no actual seam to put belts thru).

I'll probably go with lap belts only when i do buy some. Anyone perhaps know of the best place and price for some??

Thanks,
Mike.

In Massachusetts, my understanding is that you are only required to have seatbelts if the car was originally provided with them- I think they came in to being around '65 or so in every car.

So here, at least, you'd be fine without them (although it might be prudent to add them for your own safety).

U.S.DOT Standards & Regulations are accepted by all states getting Federal Hwy. tax dollars. 1964 & earlier autos did'nt have seat belts. The car is not required to have them if the original mfg. was not required by U.S.DOT to install them. If you install them, then the states can require that you use them.
