I raced my 462 powered 67 GS almost every weekend for four years in the foot-brake (heavy) class at Island Dragway in NJ. I also attended countless test and tunes and street car nights. I drove the car 30 miles to the track, unpacked, switched to slicks, pumped up the airbags and front tires, switched plugs, checked the timing and would click off some 11.20s (11.60s fully loaded on street tires). The best parts was showing the 462 to racers that had lost to me and watching their faces when they realized it was not Chevy powered. I think making the quick 16 twice at Buick Day in Englishtown, and once to the semi-finals was also a great experience. It was always nice to hear from the Buick faithful, as I was usually the lone 455/462 in my class. The thrill of having a Vett, hemi powered Cuda or an LS6 Chevelle finishing a third of the track behind during a time shot wears off after a few years. Then it is about going faster, earning a reputation as a good racer that does not beat himself, and challenging other good racers with your “deviant” creation. In the best races against good racers, won or lost, I did not know the winner until the win light was lit!
