1962 LeSabre Trans Issue

Hello All,

I purchased my LeSabre last Saturday. The 401 Nailhead runs very well. I have replaced many ignition parts and she's running well. My issue right now is that she will drive in L only. Reverse works well. When placed into D it acts like it is in neutral. Could this be linkage issues or valve body?

thanks!

I have seen this one. In 1960 my dad insisted that we start his Buick with a twin turbine transmission by towing it. The pump runs off the input shaft so the transmission gets no lubrication while being towed. Your problem is most likely a burned out sprag clutch on the rear output shaft. Rebuild time.

I would order a filter, fluid and pan gasket and have a peek inside. if a sprag clutch or anything else went out, there would be debris in the pan. While it could be linkage related, it would be unlikely if all the other spots (park, reverse neutral and low) are lined up correctly. It can ba a bit messy and easier on a hoist, but inspecting the trans is the next step before overhauling it IMHO.
