Thread: 1967 GS 400 QUESTIONS?

Is 15 lbs at idle thru 50 lbs at speed, good oil pressures on a 1967 GS 400 engine? I've read about the Buick oil pressure problems in high mileage Buicks and what to know if the high pressure/high volume oil pump kits are the way to go.
Also, I really want to re-install the original air cleaner back on the car, but now I have an Edelbrock B4B intake and an old Holley on it and I don't have the clearance or the fit for the air cleaner base. Is there an adapter kit or an old school trick, or do I need a lower plane on the intake to install?

Your oil pressure sounds excellent. 10 lbs/ 1000 rpm is rule of thumb I've seen.
Not sure about the air cleaner, I always thought the performer and b4b were similar to stock height wise, but different fore and aft- would it clear if it were back 2"?

    BTW, Welcome to the site!

Thanks for the oil pressure info. The base of the air cleaner will not fit the Holley due to the base hitting the float bowls. My air cleaner is the "star wars" air cleaner and it was in pretty bad shape, so I ground down the air fins inside the air cleaner to try and fit a small 6" air cleaner underneath the original air cleaner and that didn't give me the clearance either. I do have a mint spare air cleaner for a restoration in the future. There's no way to move the air cleaner or the base back 2". Looks like I need the original intake or I do beleive Edlebrock makes another intake for use on "ram air" air cleaners for 400 and 455 engines.

I would not go for a high-volume or high-pressure oil pump. They are not needed, and cause extra wear on the drive gears.

if you have oil pressure problems, that is because of another problem (i.e. worn bearings) and that kind of oil pump can work as a temporary band-aid, but the engine will still need attention.

If you are going to do something that increases oil volume requirements (i.e. pumping oil through a turbo or something), then you might consider a high-volume pump. But that is a REALLY unusual circumstance.

One other thing - your oil pressure almost sounds TOO high. Maybe you could consider a lighter-viscosity oil (i.e. 10-30 instead of 20-50) to reduce parasitic drag, as long as your oil pressure still stays high (at least 10 PSI per 1000 RPM).
