Unhappy put engine in and then trouble

took out my 72 455 gs motor to replace gaskets,,ended up doing the heads,,cleaned and detailed it and put it back in,,set the dist.,,think its right,,tried to start it,,just had a battery charger on it at first,,just wouldn't go,,jumped it and it tried,,some back fires,,puffs through the carb,,almost got it going,,went in the house to check the comp. on the timing setting,,went back out and it started cranking real hard,,it will crank but the starter is running hard and getting the clicking while turning over the moter like something is bound up,,took the valve cover off and its pumping oil,,just started the hard cranking after I went in to the house,,had left the jump bronco running while I looked on the net for about 10 mins,,pulling the plugs today to see if it cranks any better with them out,,hoping its the starter,,,does any one think I could have spun a bearing,,oil pump maybe bound up,,kinda baffled by it doing it so quick out of the blue,,was turning the dist. to dial it in and had some big backfires 1 or 2,,then it sat for 10 mins and cranked hard,,cut the face of the fly wheel down alittle because it was rubbing and had burnt spots in it but don't believe that has anything to do with it,,any thoughts,,pulling the plugs now guess ill go from there

I think your distributor may be 180* out as the crank turns twice for every distributor turn. You can put it in the correct location with the crank at #1 TDC, but still be out of phase. You would need to turn the crank another 360 from where it is at #1 TDC and then put the distributor back in at #1 TDC. Also check your wires are right for the firing order. I think your cranking issues are due to the amount of cranking you did and wearing the battery down. I'd charge it up good again and try again with the distributor in the correct phase.
