Thread: Starter wires on carburetor 1953 str8

Starter wires on carburetor 1953 str8

I had the carburetor rebuilt and I feel like the metal leads on for the starter engage is different. engaged properly at the pedal before taking apart for carb rebuild. Now the starter engages as soon as the key is turned to the on position. It shuts off when the engine starts but re-engages when it is turned off and makes a god-awful grinding.
Could someone take a picture of how theirs looks or help me figure how all these wires are supposed to hook up? What do you even call this piece where these wires go?
This is all original 6v system

Thanks alot, excited to be part of the team here.

This car has been in my family going on 20 years now.

    Starter problem

Your problem is probably from an adjustment to the vacuum starter switch on the carburetor. Section 10-31 of the shop manual explains the function of the switch. Sections 10-32 and 10-33 explain the adjustment procedure for Carter and Stromberg carburetors. The reason the starter disengages when the car starts is because the solenoid is grounded through the generator. When the engine starts, the voltage in the generator opens the ground circuit and stops the starter. If your vacuum switch on the carburetor is not adjusted properly it can do what you described.
    Good luck.

No. It makes no difference. The switch is activated by mechanical to close and vacuum to open once the engine starts and runs.
Your problem is possibly in the vacuum supply to the switch or the timing adjustment of the switch.

The procedure is explained in detail in the shop repair manual. I would suggest you obtain a manual if you do not have one. It saved me a lot of grief and a lot of time.
    Good Luck

Thanks alot, I'll have to check it out. I don't have a shop manual, is there anywhere else I can find some info about the vacuum switch or should I invest in a manual?
I kind of feel like it may be a different vacuum switch that came with the rebuild kit because I marked down where the wires went and there were four different points they went to. the new switch only has three.

I am not familiar with the system you are talking about. But this website has a reference section with a whole group of different shop/service manuals. There is a '52 service manual which does cover the adjustments mentioned by CKRussell. He also had the sections correct which made it easy for me to find for you. Below are the links to the information you are looking for.

Here is the link to the exact section.
