Thread: Sputtering Engine

    Sputtering Engine

I am in need of a good mechanic to help me figure out some issues I'm having with my engine.

The car is a 1970 Buick Skylark with a 350 that has been toatally rebuilt and has less than 200 miles on it.

I'm pretty sure that I'm either having carburetor or timing problems, maybe both. The carb is a 1406 model Edelbrock with a TA performance Stage 1 intake.

Here is a brief explanation of what the car is doing, it always starts right up after one pump of the gas pedal, the car does drive but while under acceleration (if you hit the gas hard it accelerates fine) but under steady acceleration at cruising speed and at idle the engine sputters. I checked the spark plugs and a couple of them are black but none of them are wet and if I hit the brakes hard it dies.

Everything in/on the engine has less than 200 miles on it except the alternator, power steering pump and the battery.

If you have any suggestions, or if you can help me, or if you know someone who can help me please email me, I will definitely pay for any help even if you can point me in the right direction.

    I'm located in Bremerton WA.

    Thanks, Josh

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem, maybe in conjunction with a spark problem...... let me ask this...... it runs fine at idle correct? if you open the hood and use your hand to pump the accelerator what happens? Can you here/see the fuel spraying down the throat of the carb in a steady pattern or does it dribble out?

Float level is too high or the calibration on the carb. is too rich.
