well fellas, i just ordered the NEW ta performance water pump @ $195.00. TA claims they have had great feed back controlling heating problems previously that where uncurabile. has anybody tried the NEW pump? my problem is a little different than most with overheating occuring on the freeway. my car (1938 buick w/455, th400, 9" 3:00, walker super cobra raditor w/2700elect. fan) idles around parade grounds @ 195 all day only to go tilt (240) when i pull onto the freeway...........very frustrating. i added a 6 blade fixed 15" fan to the system last summer which dropped temps to 225 but the noise is unacceptable. i will keep everyone informed.

I always had the opposite problem - getting hot in stop and go Atlanta traffic. I bought the TA water pump hoping to cure the idle overheating problem. I haven't fired it up yet since I am getting to where I can actually put my rebuilt engine in my 71gs. My engine is actually a 430 (code ND) out of a 67 riv that replaced the original 350 before I bought it back in 1983. One thing unique to tihs engine is the exhaust heat trace under the carb. That was blocked and made a significant difference. The next thing was to make sure you are getting all of your spark advance in by around 2500 rpm. This will definitely affect highway operating temperatures.
One thing that was touched on a few years ago on this forum concerning heating at highway speed in the older body styles was air movement through the front end sheet metal. One guy said that when he propped up the back of his hood with a wood block to let out the trapped air his highway temps dropped significantly. Might be something to think about. You never know, your car might look sharp with a louvered hood.
the early results indicate this new pump really works. First of all is the completly different design of the impeller and gasket that must be silconed overnite. Upon inital startup (w/160 thermo) electric fan (on @ 180) did not come on even after 30 min. of idling!! Residental driving of 30 minutes still @ 160 WOW. On the freeway @70 mph w/AC on (ambiant temp 75) temp never exceeded 195..............I am waiting for a 90 + day for the finale test. So far so good. Wish I could post pictures of the impeller redesign.
