Okay, I sat down and tried to figure out when this started. It was when a know it all adjusted stuff on the carb. So I checked everything and the thermostatic coil was unsprung and loose. So I coiled it back up and tightened it. I lined up the adjustments so it was right on center. I started the car and the same thing backfiring. I think the problem has to do with this issue but I can not find any info that can help. I adjusted it lean and rich and it made no difference. Could this be part of the issue? I did pull all of the plugs and other than smelling fuel they were fine and all set at .30.

In your first post you listed your car as having a Rochester Quadrajet. That carb in the pictures is obviously not a Quadrajet. It is a Carter AFB or an Edelbrock copy of one. I think you are on the right track with where your problems started. You have a choke linkage issue or something of that nature. If you are determined to fix this yourself, there are books out there that have the information that you need. Old repair manuals may also be a good source as this carburetor was standard issue on a lot of cars in the early 60's. If it is an Edelbrock carb you could try calling them and asking their advice. I was at my local Barnes and Noble book store and saw a book in their automotive section that was devoted specifically to these carburetors. You might look into that. Or as I have often stated, you may just have to take the thing to a professional and pay to have it straightened out.

That carb set up is odd.

    You need a good Qjet.

lostinmyhead- if your 350 is equiped with a EGR valve, it will act like you described if the plunger is not moving freely. a little penitrating oil.

I know I am WAY late to this thread however I say you have bad gas in the tank and varnish.

I also agree that a Q jet is the best carb for a stock 350.
