Thread: 69 Skylark 350 Oil Light

  1. #1

Question 69 Skylark 350 Oil Light

My 69 skylark 350 2 barrell oil light is starting to flicker when the engine is hot and the car is at a stop. From past experience with my Chevys I know it's a weak oil pump. What I need to know is can I change the oil pump without removing the engine and where is the best place to get a new oil pump?

It has a pump in front housing - not replaceable.

RockAuto (as does Autozone) has oil pump repair kits.
Might call your local parts house to see if they can get
    you the kit.

I'll PM ya with a scan from the oil pump repair procedure page
in a 1970 Motor's Manual ... let me know if you didnt' get the PM

Thanks for that heads up. As you can tell I am new to Buick stuff. I can't wait to see the scan for the repair procedure. Have you done one? Is it hard to do?

There is a real good chance that the oil pump is not the only thing that is worn out. Your bearing clearances in the bottom end are likely loose and just putting new gears in the old housing will not solve the problem. It is a step in the right direction but I would expect a marginal and temporary improvement at best. You need to closely inspect the housing and replace it if necessary. These housings are not hard to get as they are the same as the 231 V-6. Any reputable parts supplier should be able to get you one. There is a high volume kit that is available that can be installed as a band aid for loose clearances that might get you by. But do not use it if you tighten up the bottom end as it will overload the front cam bearing and cause other problems. Your best bet would be to put a set of bearings in it ( grind the crank if necessary ) and a new housing and gear set and be good to go for a long time.

have you tried an analog oil guage - just to make sure it IS the oil pressure, and not a bad idiot light?

how's the quality of the oil?

Thank you for the information. After $14.00 and about 45 min my Buick is running like a champ. I can't believe how how easy it was to rebuild the buick 350 oil pump over changing one in a chevy 350. GO BUICKS.

I'm surprised that it was the oil pump, and not just a problem with the engine clearances. But nevertheless, I'm glad that fixed the issue!
