Thread: 67 riv not starting hot

Unhappy 67 riv not starting hot

After getting to operating temperature and shutting down the engine where upon it climbs to around 230degrees it refuses to start?

It doesn't even try to turn over. I can hear some kind of relay when I turn the key but nothing else. It seems completely dead until it gets down to near cold where it starts like you wouldn't have thought anything was wrong with it.

I think it might be the starter solenoid but could be anything i suppose? It's not the park/neutral switch, I've made sure thats working.

its really frustrating havening to be pushed to the side of the gas-station forecourt to wait for it to cool down

    Any help would be appreciated

i'm definitely a non-expert, but it sounds like your starter might be going. the starter's close to the exhaust manifold and subject to heat-related problems. sometimes knocking on the starter with a long stick will get it to work. i'd bet the clicking sound you hear is the starter solenoid engaging.
i dunno how to bench-test something like that.

    Thumbs up

if it starts fine after cooling down it's a solenoid hot-soak.also the return spring under the solenoid in the early days was too stiff & was the main cause of this, the newer(72 up)starters used a weaker spring to cure the problem.
