    real gs 455

    hello

i'm alex, i 'm writing from europe. normaly i'm not used in driving buick , but it could change in a few days. probabely i want to buy a buick gs 455 convertible 1970 . how i can find out, if it's a real gs 455? where is the vin-code and what has and where has it to be stamped on the engine block?
    thank you very much
    alex

the 1970 VIN does not code the engine so you'll have to look at the engine stampings. find them here:
    http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/engine_ident_where.html

your digit code should be "SS" and the last 8 digits of your EIN should match the last 8 digits of the VIN.

find more info about the 1970 GS here:

i tried out to find the EIN stampings, but they weren't there. is it possible, that they are at another place stamped, or is the engine not original? look also at the picture...

    thank you

    i'm sorry, i had a brain fart.

in 1970 the engine was NOT coded in the VIN ... but the GS455 was a seperate model NOT a trim option. so it DOES show up in the VIN.

the VIN still wouldn't tell you whether or not you had a Stage 1 engine though.

the first 3 digits of your VIN should be "446".

the engine doesn't look 'good'. in 1970 the intake, block and heads would all be painted a deep Red. most all of the Blue engines are from 1975/76.

can you pull a valve cover and get us the casting number for the head? post the block and intake numbers as well.

    trim tag

Is it me or does the second tag look home-made, un even letters spacing, the letters GS. it just does not look right. Did Buick offer bucket seats in 1970 in a GS convert ???
