Hot Rod magazine strokes a 300 v8 out to 349 cubes

just for grins and giggles, the April edition of Circle Track has a full blown rebuild and dyno test on a "Late Model Stock" SBC engine that's going to be raced at Daytona ( 4/10s mile oval track ) Feb 17-19, 2013. it wouldn't surprise me if they spent $30,000 to build this motor and it's got ALL the trickest parts they can stuff into it. the main thing holding it back is a 2v Holley 500cfm carb with a 'small volume' dual plane intake.

here's their dyno sheet:
Code:
RPM TORQUE HORSEPOWER
3,800 448 324.1

6,800 337.5 437

so, the little 349 that could isn't too godawful far off from a modern, high dollar, circle track engine. and the Buick did it on 91 octane. you can be sure the SBC is on 105+ octane race gas and is probably ~360 cubes. the biggest advantage the circle track is has is that they're going almost to 7k rpm with it.

CT doesn't have the story posted online just yet, but here's one they covered last year from a similar engine:
