1955 special - what is this?

Potentially a dumb question but no other way to learn 🤷‍♀️ The 2 arms that should be connected but are not.... what are they?

The only thing that looked possible in my manual was strut rods, but the manual says those are riveted to a bracket near the torque tube, these are not. I'm guessing some sort of control arm?

Both are bad but this one is REALLY bad.
 
I see the left rear shock absorber , the part mounted on the brake backing plate. The vertical link to the right is just that. Called a shock link, I believe.

Thank you!! So does that mean my car doesn't have tube shocks on the rear, it has lever shocks?
 
bluebetty don't be discouraged. If you leisurely look for parts you can find affordable replacement parts. On e#ay for example there are sellers with item for astronomical prices in the hundreds, but if you just look a bit more the same part from other sellers are asking for less than $30. in similar condition and authenticity. Also, there are rebuilders of these parts, just have to look and not go running straight to the e#ay.
 
The links are available from Bobs Automobilia and Cars, Inc. The shock may be ok. There is a small fill hole on the top. Remove the , I believe 1/4 inch, plug. Fill with hydraulic oil. ANY OIL WILL WORK. If the seals are not shot, and the oil does not leak TOO bad, the shock will probably get you by. DO ALL OF THEM, including the front ones.

Thank you, I'll take a look at those.

So let me ask one more thing... is there a bolt/nut that is supposed to connect the link to the shock? The way it is, even if the shock is good its completely separated.

I see a lock nut & bushing on cars llc, just not sure if thats the same thing that I'm talking about...
 
Yes, the link lower end incorporates a tapered bolt which goes through the shock absorber lever and is fastened with a nut. The arrangement is similar to the pathetic stabilizer bar links commonly used these days, except for the taper.
