Question camshaft break-in...(did I break it?)

So I finaly got the whole thing installed over the weekend.

Break-in was damn scary! for the first 10-12 minutes it sounded like it was gonna blow itself to hell, but then it settled down (as did my heartrate, lol)
I ended up having it running for about 25 minutes, and then let it cool overnight.

Started it up the next day and there is a tick in it, can't pinpoint it to one valve (like before) but I don't know what it could be other than valves

It's faint at idle but becomes more apparent at higher RPM.

Is this 'normal' after a break-in and will it fade away or is there a good chance I did something wrong? maybe a 'bad' new lifter? worn pushrod maybe (I didn't get new ones)?

I just got a timing light the other day, going to set my ignition 100%, maybe that helps...idk

You could have had a lifter bleed down overnight. I would take it for a short ride and see if it is still ticking when you return. Some of the lifters out there today are not up to par, but let's see if it goes away under load first.

had it warm up a bit in the driveway and then drove it around the block for about 4 miles...doesn't seem to make any difference

I have a trip to germany planned next weekend to an event, about 200+ miles round trip. would it be wise to take the Buick? see what ot does, or am I risking my whole engine?

in addition: "maybe" worn rockers, valve stem height not correct, cam if not new but reground will have a smaller base circle and along with other worn components and thick head gaskets. Drive it a few hundred miles to see of it calms down or shows you where to look.

So the old man pulled off the valve covers yesterday while I was at work. No problems in the right bank, but the left bank has play on the exaust of no. 1 and 3, and on the intake of no. 4.

I'm gonna open the top later today to see what's what.

I've got 4 good, high quality lifters that where on the old cam as a quick temporary fix before I got everything to put in the new cam...would it be a good idea (or atleast worth a try) to put those in the bad spots? They only did about 200 miles.

When you pull it apart, check the cam, lifters (check if pumped up and bottoms), pushrods, rockers on the affected cylinders. Then throw in the known good lifters with some assembly lube.

Well, changed the lifters on the 3 noisy valves but no difference.
Good news is the new cam seems to be in good shape aswell as the lifters. Bad news is my rockers are worn out.
So I've got 16 new rockers and pushrods comming out here...hopefully soon or my whole holiday is gonna go to hell

Buy a Buick they said. It will be fun they said! Lol ;P

She lives to break down another day!

Got my new rockers and pushrods in the other day and new the nail runs perfectly like it should.

Now the real test will come when I take my 2000 mile round trip to Sweden in 2 weeks.

Thanks to everyone here for the info and input!
