Thread: Cracked 455 heads! :(

    Cracked 455 heads! :(

    Hello,

My name is Sjoerd and i’m from the Netherlands.

As i posted earlier on this board:
    I own a 1975 Buick Electra with a 455 engine.
    My car: http://home.wanadoo.nl/9man/Buick.htm
I am currently overhauling my engine.

I have dismantled it and the block and heads are now at the machine-shop, for cleaning and checking.
They just called me with some really bad news, both of my heads have cracks in them.
This explains why my engine was using coolingwater for quite a while, and a new head-gasket didn’t help.

So, I’m looking for 2 heads for my engine, which will then be overhauled and fitted with new valves by our machineshop.

    Only problem is $$$$$
I don't have the cash to order a couple of new ones at taperformance or something, and would really like some old ones without cracks so i can take em to the machine-shop and have them overhauled.

    Any ideas?
I hope someone can help me out, because finding some spare 455 heads in the netherlands is quite a task...

    Thanks
    Sjoerd

I have a set of 76 heads that i just took of my engine i havent had them checked but i am pretty sure that they are ok. I changed them out to put the 70's heads on their for more compresion. I dont know if your willing to lose the compresion (im not sure if you will for a 74) but i am willing to sell them if your interested.

    75 and 76 have the same low compression heads ( 7.9:1 ).

    Electifying's heads would work fine.

you might want to see if you could come by some earlier, higher compression heads though. 71 to 74 are 8.5:1 and 67 to 70 are all supposed to have the same combustion chamber volume ( 69cc ) with ~10:1.

Living in the Netherlands, you may want to consider the TA aluminum heads. Shipping cast iron heads will be VERY costly. The new heads will also not need to be rebuilt saving even more .
