Hello. I have just registered and am interested in pre-1950 Buick info, particularly 1939 Special (248 engine).
I have a model 48 2 door sedan that is nearly completed. I have owned it for abour 6 years, and have been working on it while keeping it roadable as much as possible. The engine was removed and sent for rebuild by the previous owner - but I think they did not replace the valve guides, as it smokes a little on starting, and prolonged idling - all characteristic of worn valve guides. Does any one know of a valve guide seal that will work in these enginges without changing to single valve springs? I have heard that some years ago a company named Champ Items Inc. made a set of seals, but I guess the company is out of business. Anyway, it is nice to be able to talk with people with the same interests. By the way, my '39 is all stock - the only modification is sealed beam headlights, for the little night use it gets.
