    Larger Valves for 300 heads

Has anyone ported the 300 aluminum heads? How about putting in larger valves?
Drop me a line if you have any info. I have a 215 that has been punched to 3.726" (Chevy 305 standard) and am using 283 rods, 300 crank and 305 standard pistons with flat tops.

On my 300 the builder installed Rover Vitesse valves. The seats are almost touching and some material was added to the dome and shaped to help with the flow (now the compression is even HIGHER, which is insane . . . ).

The additional head work was also a little radical, it took two sets to make one, but right now they're pretty well optimized.

    Luck,

I'm using Buick V6 Stage 1 valves from Ferrea. They are the 6000 series

valves which are competition valves suitable for solid roller cams. Intake
valves are part number F6238 (1.775" head diameter, 11/32" stem, 4.735"
long with a 0.271" tip). Exhausts are part number F6237 (1.5" head diameter,

11/32" stem, 4.735" long with a 0.254" tip). Intake head shape is a 10 degree Super Flo. Exhaust is a 29 degree tulip.

You need to consider the valves (length and style/location of keeper),
retainer and spring as a package. Some funky combinations have been used on Buick 300 heads to get larger valves and readily available springs. The Buick V6 Stage 1 valves have the right ballpark length and tip to use readily available Z28 springs and LT1 retainers if the cam lift doesn't get over say 0.550" (there are a couple of different springs, one's good to 0.500", the other is good to 0.550"). The intake valves are a little large but were turned down to fit the seats. I don't have the seat part numbers handy. BTW, Competition Products has titanium retainers for the 1.25" SBC springs for $70. I've not picked the heads up yet but I'm told they flow over 200 CFM with excellent low lift flow.

Another option would be Ford 2.3L turbo 4 cylinder valves. They have a
couple of different p/n's with a little different specs. Here's one of them:

    Ferrea P/N F6223 (Intake valve for a Ford 2.3L), 1.74" head diameter,
    11/32" diameter stem, 4.8 long, 0.4" tip.
    Ferrea P/N F6224 (Exhaust valve for a Ford 2.3L), 1.50" head diameter,
    11/32" diameter stem, 4.8 long, 0.4" tip.

I had the same trouble finding seat #'s I'll ask my machine shop...

Here's a copy of the larger valve set up I put in my heads:

The intake valve is replaced with a 1.720" diameter piece from
    Â the 1988 - 92 Pontiac "Iron Duke" 151ci 4-cylinder engine
    Â (Federal Mogul p/n V2530). The 300 head's exhaust is opened up
    Â using Manley P/N11667-4 Volkswagen 38mm (1.496) stainless
Â steel exhaust valves. The larger valves will require new seats, such
Â as Precision PC1500-31 (exhaust) and PC1750-39 (intake)

I tried to find seats based on these numbers but I found nothing. The
VW valves are from a flat four. Cool. The intake valves are .041 longer
than stock and the exhaust are .056 longer. This works out OK
especially if you are planning on a larger cam because it helps balance
out the rocker geometry for a taller lift.

I got the VW valves here:

    Hope this helps.
