Thread: Question on Duual Exhaust on My buick 1953

Question Question on Duual Exhaust on My buick 1953

I had been toying with the idea of runnng dual exhaust on my '53 buick super at some point. had been told before that I should be able to run a 1956 Buick nailhead dual exhaust manifold with no problems. (they didn't have them in 1955 did they??) I'm not sure if I already have asked this before on here,.....if so, my apologies!!

I know I could always weld up a set, but i was wondering if there was another way,...a more "headache free" way! LOL! hence the '56 idea??

I also was wondering, since i'm going to be having a set of custom pipes made up anyway, is it advisable to just run duals off my regular exhaust manifolds? Would there be any problems, etc. in doing so or is it even possible?

    Thanks in advance!

    Smile RE: '56 Manifold

    Hey Jason,

The '56 with improved heads and larger Manifolds were designed to run with dual enhaust.

The earlier "Nailheads" regardless of being a 264 or a 322 all had the "Famous" "Y" PIPE

In order to accomplish this, Buick designing enginners put a hole in the frame crossmembers in order to achieve easy access of the additional exhaust pipe on the drivers side, so the pipes run straight through and the '56 exhaut manifolds were designed for just that purpose along with better volume for breathing.

By your reply then, I'm assuming that you would eb advising "against" just using the stock manifolds and making a custom exhuast stystem based on what is alredy there??

Also, I'm going to assume that to run the '56 dual manifolds I would just have to modify the frame of my '53 in the exact same area the '56 was?

if you can clarify those for me, that would be great, thanks

    Hey Coal Town Kid

Your probably celebrating the Steelers well deserved Victory right about now

I think that it would be easier using the '56 manifolds and cutting an access hole (along with some additional structural support) in the frame.

You will get better results and obtain better breathing and sound which I assume your looking for.

Custom making a 2 to 1 and another 2 pipe flare (double "Y" pipe)will be a real pain in the Butt and you will STILL have the frame obstruction to contend with.

With the double Y Pipe you will also find difficulty assessing other components under the car.

Do You have access to a '56 donor car?

    Hope this clarifies things.

If You have any additional questions, You know where to find me.

    Hey Jason,

Glad I was able to HELP! You out.

I get most of my resourse information from a publication called "BUICK PARTS LOCATION GUIDE WHICH IS AVAILABLE FROM THE LITERATURE ADVERTISEMENTS ON THIS WEB SITE. It will cost You about 30 Bucks, but it is $Money$ well spent

It's about 128 Pages of BUICK Parts and Services Vendors and Suppliers.

    You can't beat it

Between the Parts Guide, Hemmings, A Parts Book and Service Manual, I just about have ALL the Bases covered and I'm Good to Go!

Pick-Up any/all literature on You Model Buic that You can get You Grubbly Hands ON!

Hope Your are able to get the Items that You Need.

Make a shopping list. Do You have a 4 barrel Manifold and Carb?

Besides the '56 Exhaust Manifolds, you might want to get a set of '56 Heads also if the price is right. A '56 322 is rated at 255 HP which is considerably better than what your running now.

If You need any more HELP! You know where to find me.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting. You will probably feel like an alcoholic in a liquor store.

You will probably have to do some barganing. So be perpaired. There are always people who take unfair advantage.

Bring Tools and possibly a Friend. Who knows how far you will have to carry the stuff. Do You have a Hand Truck?

Your expidition will be a learning experience for sure!

Look under a '56 and see what they did to the frame cross rail. Bring a Camera.

    Hey Jason

It appears someone hacked into the system and 2 days of posts and communication "disappeared"

I did manage to get some of the information from the E-mail notification!

How could I have missed those buick salvage yards?? Where'd you
find them,....as they "specialize" in Buicks?

    Buick Unlimited, Newville, PA 717-776-4445

    Boyer's Restorations, Hanover, PA 717-632-0670

Klinger's Used Auto Sales, Pine Grove PA 570-345-8778

Well, Klinger's looks like it's only 1 1/2 hours away....
Boyer's is a little furthur, about 3 hours away,....maybe more??
and Buick Unlimited is 2 hours 16 minutes away.

I'll try calling them later tomorrow,....thanks Tom!

    Hey Jason,

I was kind of surprised myself, when 2 days of post disapeared. Because I wrote them, members thought that I deleated the messages. As it so happens, Bob said (Bob Also posted to notify fellow members) that some "Hackers" wiggled their way into the system and wiped out 2 days worth of communication. That has never happened before!
That sort of stuff is not done here with the "Good Guys" unless unappropriate language is used or if verbal assualt is used against another member. This is a friendly, congenial, atmoshere and we are All here to HELP! each other.

Anyway.....Did you get All the information You needed?

You might want to make a shopping list, bring some tools and a hand truck. Who knows how far you will have to lug the stuff.

Also bring a camera and a battery pack lighting source.

You also might want to take a picture of that '56 transmission cross member
and some measurements for that access hole. LQQK on the back side to see how they made the "Box Support" to strenghten the cross-member

If You call ahead those are some question you might want to ask in advance.

I'm sure it will be a fun time. You will probably be like a little kid in a candy store.

Let Us know how you make out.

    Regards,

    Tom Gallagher
