I was thinking about the possibility of machining down a chevy flywheel to the right diameter and then popping the 161 tooth Buick ring gear over it and bolting that to my 300. I plan to have the engine balanced anyway so I thought this would be a lot cheaper than spending $250 at POstons. Has anyone tried this or does anyone know of any issues I might need to deal with to try this out? Any help greatly appreciated.
I would suggest using a performance steel flywheel. I am uncertain about the 300, but the 400/430/455 series flywheel requires a new bolt pattern be drilled. The dowel plug for the chevy pin may be easily filled with weld with a steel flywheel allowing more room for the new drilling pattern.
