Park / Neutral switch on transmission

I have a '91 park avenue, 3.8L /auto tranny. Every so often when I get in the car and turn the key, the engine won't turn over, and I suspect the lockout switch on the tranny is not adjusted properly. In other words, the engine thinks the tranny is in drive or reverse. Where is the park / neutral lockout switch located on the tranny?

Abe,
On most cars, the switch is mounted on the steering column. You probably should get a service manual to tell you for sure.

The switch is on the shifter shaft at the top of the transmission (under the hood ) i have not seen this to be a common problem . I would remove both battery cables & clean them and replace the long pos. battery bolt & spacer .This is the most common problem area with these car with inter. start. Also this is cheaper to fix than a park switch . I hope you find this to be the problem . Gyuopel
