while the size of your tank may be of interest to you, it is not necessary to solve the problem you pose. you really want to know the amount of fuel burned. top off the tank to the point you cannot put another drop in the filler neck and note the odometer mileage. repeat this process the next time you buy gasoline. divide the difference in the odometer readings by the amount of fuel you just bought. the result is mpg.
