    Trying to identify an engine

I came across a large v8 engine and i think it is a buick big block. the bell housing has a V at the top. The starter is on the driver side and the oil filter is on the passenger side. The distributor is in the back with a slight slant to the drivers side and it is a points distrbutor. I will post a picture soon with serial numbers. It has the trans still on it with some type of long overdrive unit on the back. Just wondering what the heck it is. It has a 4barrel Quadra jet carb so it must be eary 70 ar late 60. I know with out the numers or pictures its a shot in the dark so i will update the post when i get them.

It could only be a Nailhead if it is a Buick. The other Buicks have the distributor in the front and the starter on the right. Where is the oil filter located? Olds and Pontiac have the starter on the left , but I cant remember where the distributor is on those cars.

I am having a hard time finding the numbers on the engine I have looked at the back of the block and between exhaust manifold parts and I have had no luck. Several people have said it was a 340 however I have no pictures to reference what a 340 looks like. Does anyone have any sugestions?

first of all, don't tack your question onto the end of an unrelated thread ... that's an easy way for it to get missed. i think that's why noone has replied to you until now.

second, the 215/300/340 family of engines can be id'd by the 4 bolt valve covers. as part of the post Nailhead Buick engine families, the distributor should, of course, be at the front of the block.

That's a Poncho engine. The Cubic Inch should be cast clearly on the lower side of the block close to where the starter is mounted or toward the front on the left lower side. See if it has a 350,400 or 428. The other numbers will be on the block behind the distributor.
